The Glossary contains vocabulary that is used frequently within
the surgicallink.ca website.

  • A connecting element. An abutment is the element that an implant is fastened to.

    Solid AbutmentsOne piece, solid abutments that are used in conjunction with the TSI/ERI dental implants.
    Natural Contour Aesthetic AbutmentA two piece titanium alloy abutment with a lower facial margin and higher interproximal margin.
    Shielded AbutmentA two piece titanium alloy abutment that covers the margin of the TSI or ERI dental implants.
    Pedestal AbutmentA modifiable two-piece titanium alloy abutment that emerges directly out of the implant's interface keeping the implant's margin exposed.

  • Used for indexing temporary crowns as lab burnout coping.
  • The bony ridge of the maxillae or mandible that contains the alveoli (sockets of the teeth).
  • A dental procedure performed to reverse bone loss or destruction caused by periodontal disease, trauma or ill-fitting removable dentures.
  • A fixed dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth by joining an artificial tooth permanently to adjacent teeth or dental implants.
  • An artificial tooth that is anchored in the gums or jawbone to replace a missing tooth.

  • A fixed or removable appliance used to replace one or more lost or missing teeth.
  • Is the condition of having no teeth or being toothless.
  • Immediate loading refers to the dental implant procedure of same day extraction and immediate implant placement surgery. We may also refer to immediate loading as "one day dental implants" or "teeth in a day."
  • A specialized field of dentistry, (Implant Dentistry) dealing with the placement and/or the restoration of dental implants.
  • Dental implantology is a set of surgical techniques aiming at the functional rehabilitation of a patient who is either totally or partially edentulous, by using dental implants.
  • The component of a dental implant system used to provide a spatial relationship of an endosteal dental implant to the alveolar ridge and adjacent definition or other structures.
  • The Maxillae (plural) consists of upper palate of the mouth or maxilla or two halves that are fused at the intermaxillary stature to form the upper jaw.
  • Like traditional dental implants, Mini implants perform the same function but the difference is in the size. Conventional dental implants are 3.7mm in diameter or greater and mini implants less than 3.0mm. Mini implants are used in situations where the bone of the missing tooth is very shallow and narrow or where budget is limited. Mini implants cost less than conventional dental implants.
  • The activity of fastening something firmly in position; Osseous fixation is the fastening of something that is composed of, containing or resembling bone.
  • Also known as 'bone cutting' is a dental procedure in which a surgeon removes a wedge of bone near a damaged joint.
  • A non-fixed dental appliance applied to a small number of natural teeth or implants.
  • The branch of dentistry that deals with the replacement of missing teeth and related mouth or jaw structures by bridges, dentures or other artificial devices.
